Coal-based activated carbon is developed through a series of processes such as carbonization, cooling, activation, and scrubbing. Its appearance is generally black cylindrical activated carbon, amorphous coal granular activated carbon, also known as broken carbon. Cylindrical activated carbon, also known as columnar carbon, is generally prepared by mixing and kneading powdery materials and binders, kneading and then carbonizing and activating. It can also be kneaded by using powdered activated carbon plus a binder.

It has the characteristics of prosperous pore structure, good adsorption function, high mechanical strength, easy re-regeneration and low cost. It is used for purification of toxic gases, waste gas treatment, purification of industrial and domestic water, and solvent recovery.

The coal-based granular activated carbon has high strength, high pore volume, large specific surface area, especially large pore volume and unique advantages. Coal-based activated carbon has strong adsorption capacity for organic matter, free chlorine and harmful gases in the air. It is a good adsorbent for deep purification of urban drinking water and is used to remove bacteria and poisonous gases from the air.

Coal-based activated carbon has a prosperous pore structure, good chemical stability and mechanical strength, and is a good broad-spectrum carbonaceous adsorbent. According to the shape of the exterior, coal-based activated carbon can be mainly divided into coal-based granular activated carbon and coal-based powdered activated carbon. Granular activated carbon is further divided into coal-formed carbon [including columnar carbon, briquetting carbon (or tablet carbon) and spherical carbon). And raw coal crushed activated carbon two major categories.
